Coldplay - Viva La Vida

My name is Parker Davis and I am a sophomore here at Converse. I play on the mens tennis team here and I have enjoyed my time here as a student athlete. I am taking this class not only to explore the diversity in music, but to learn and see other peoples views on it as well. I am looking forward to a great semester and getting to learn what my peers listen to in their free time.

For the past few years my go to song has been Viva La Vida by Coldplay. I have been constantly listening to this song because of its upbeat instrumental with the relatable lyrics behind the song. The song was also one of my dads favorites along with Coldplay being one of his favorite bands. My Dad has been out of my life for about three years now and whenever I listen to the music he used to play around the house it makes me feel somewhat closer to him. This song has a place in both my mind and soul because of tragic events, but it helped me get out of that dark place I was once in.

I bring this song with me into my college years because of the impact it made on my life. Talking about ruling the world one day is everyones dream, maybe not even physically ruling the world but mentally. Getting passed those obstacles that once stood in front of you, you soon learn that anything is possible if you just put your mind to it and stay focused. The ups and downs are going to come and go, but that is the whole point of a journey or others say their path of life.  Everyones got a different starting and ending, but its what you do to make the best of it is what the song Viva La Vida makes me think about.

Coldplay has the line "I used to roll the dice, feel the fear in my enemies eyes", and I relate to this line because whenever I am on the tennis court I am trying different styles of play to see what my opponent's like or dislike. This is also relatable because I have almost guessed what to do in life, since losing someone close to me I had some guidance but not much whenever it came to certain things. Learning right from wrong was something I had taught myself growing up and Viva La Vida helps remind me of my upbringing.

  4. Hey Parker, I love this song as well. I agree with how music can transport you to a nostalgic and happy time. I’m sorry for your loss and I’m glad that this song can bring you comfort. There are a couple songs that I remember listening to with my dad as well while in the car driving to school that bring me nostalgia as well however it is mostly songs by Queen. I love the way that you described the meaning of this song with saying everyone has a different starting and end, but it’s what you do to make the best of it.
